Grime Legend Wiley To Receive MBE
After nearly twenty years, eleven albums, countless mixtapes, an autobiography and the odd artist dispute (beef), Wiley, will be awarded an MBE as part of the 2018 Queen’s New Year’s Honours list.
Wiley, who was born Richard Kylie Cowie Jn, has been an ever-present force in the music industry since his formative years as a leading member of pioneering garage outfit, Pay As U Go Cartel and later with Roll Deep.
The influential, 38-year old musician is widely regarded as the godfather of grime and also the originator of the eskibeat, a derivative of the original grime sound which chiefly emanates from the streets of Wiley’s hometown, Bow E3.
Speaking on his MBE, Wiley said,
“I’m honored to be receiving an MBE. It feels like the school grade I wanted and didn’t get but now I’m finally there. I would like to thank my mother and father plus all family members and friends for being there for me when I needed them.”
Wiley joins Beatles drummer Ringo Star and Bee Gee Barry Gibb as musicians who’ll be recognised as part of the 2018 Queen’s New Year’s Honours list.
